Flower and Butterfly



The Japanese seem to have a soft spot for representations of butterflies and flowers. This theme is repeated in paintings, prints, and carvings. Sometimes the flower is a peony, as on the trinket box lid above. Other times the flower is a camellia, as on the coaster set below.


On most boxes with the flower / butterfly theme, the design is painted. The box top below is unusual in the use of this theme in a carved, unpainted presentation.
